Edvard's Trials & Tribulations

Adventures with the restoration of a Fanatic Cross 100 liter

Edvard bought a used board that was known to have had a bit of a delam problem, from someone who he had previously bought a decent board from. This one, however, turned out to be a different kettle of fish.

Since some of its problems are textbook-perfect, and since Edvard documented the proceedings so beautifully, (and since Edvard can use all the support he can get) I thought we all could benefit from sharing in his travails.

So here is Edvard's project:

"I have a Fanatic Cross 100L that I have started to repair.
I found a crack/hole under the front footpads so it had sucked some water upp for sure. I bought it in this condition knowing only about some slight delam between frontstrap and backstrap positions.

The delam area was bigger than I thought it was cause i didn´t have a chance to look at it before I bought it"

The surprise "crack" beneath the forward pad. It corresponds with the dark area fwd of the center fwd foot strap inserts. Dark means it leaked for a while.

The crack runs across the board, between two foot strap insert clusters which cause hard spots. The skin is displaced - in this case downwards, but could just as well be upwards. This is the arch-typical deck buckle. Not a local problem, then, but the first step on the way to a snap.

Observe also the foot strap inserts. The fixture outlines are clearly visible in the photo above. The photo at right confirms the suspicion that all inserts were loose. Another case for PVC cartridges!

As things come back together, Edvard will supply progress reports & photos. So do check back soon!

And do keep these photos in the back of your mind, to guide you when inspecting a used board!

Edvard's Comments:

I have a plan though in how to repair this made up from looking at your work and talking to a friend of mine who has built a couple of boards himself.
1. make sure it´s dry( may take a while) allready seams dry but water is water....
2. Smoothing things out and fix EPS with Polyurethan foam (marin version if I get hold of it here).
3. making new insert cut out for foot straps. same angel n everything
4. S-glass cloth layer laminated over fixed EPS (140g/m2 ???)
5. New Herex or DvCell laminated on top of glass
6.Carbon cloth laminated over PVC whole area. (90-160g/m2 depends of what I can get. Prefferd 1K carbon?)
7.S-Glass layer laminated over this + some Xtra glass under footpads (200g/m2 ??) (dont know how to work with woodies)
8. epoxi/gelcoat filler n sanding
9. prime n sand
10. paint + anti skid maybe some new nasty graphics.
11. Go surfing

Will probaly take the latter part of the Winter. Will not go surfin Dec-March Cause it gets cold here in South of Sweden 5 degrees celsius to -10 degrees all winter brrr. and worse...

Edvard's Story

My name is Edvard Zembron and I´m having my 30th birthday this month on the 26th. I´ve lived in Sweden all my life mainly in Helsingborg but also a few years in Gothenburg. The towns are both situated on the west coast of Sweden which provide a lot of windsurfing spots. I now live with my girlfriend in Helsingborg and were having a baby in february.
I started windsurfing in 1994 using old school equipment mainly. Me and my brother bought alot of used stuff and had a lot of fun with it and I didn´t care much about state of the art gear. There were also only 2 surfshops that I knew of back then and they almost only had expensive racing or slalom gear that wasn´t very appealing to me as I had a tight budget. 1998 I stopped surfing when I started college, I didn´t have a good place to store my gear and didn´t own a car so I guess it got a bit lenghty.
area around helsingborg:

In 2000 i started surfing again cause i found a surfclub where I could store my gear by the sea. The last season when my boom broke I started to buy some new stuff. I think I got brain washed at the surfstore or somethin cause I do tend to think very much about windsurfing since then. And I´ve bought alot of new equipment So the last year I´ve really been into it and I´m having a great time on the water, ok sometimes I have really bad days as well but that comes with the territory. (eg. learning to master my wave board can be really frustrating when wind drops or in gusty cond.)
Today I use two board mainly: A Fanatic Cross 120L -02 which i like very much. (disturbing however about inserts) And an AHD Powerwave-01 86L which i like if and only if I have constant force 6bf (at least 5+) and above because I weigh 85Kg without my 5/3 steamer, harness, helmet, vest etc. I also have an F2 wave -98 75 L for super windy days. but haven´t got around to use that one this year.
I´m usually out there in quite confused costal conditions as it get really choppy around here in Helsingborg. would like to get a bit more in to wave sailing however but that means going to other places occasionally.
So nowdays I work at a gas station selling petrol n hot dogs while I´m completing my studies in Computer engineering focused on software development. I´ts a bachelor degree so I should have been finished by now but other things caught my attention along the path . I´m also doing it "the other way around" as most of the courses that I´m completing now are from my first year such as math, statistics, digtal circuts and other super funny stuff . However I´m only working 12 days a month now to speed things up so I´ll soon be on par with it I think.... and I´ll manage to repair a sailboard as well . I´m quite stubborn and never throw the towel in at an early stage. Some people would just throw that board away and bought a new one but not me!
well suppose that tells something about me I´ll continue working with the board and I am happy to share my
progress with those who are interested!

best regards
Edvard Zembron
